3S training method originated in Wisconsin in 2002. Chris Chapman and Ellen Waukon have developed an exciting new concept in horse and rider education. It began with their struggles to recognize and overcome personal obstacles in relation to their riding. A variety of issues such as serious injury resulting in fear, physical limitations, and conflicting obligations were interfering with the enjoyment of their horses. After recognizing and coming to terms with their personal issues, they began looking at their horses, taking a tough look at what they had versus what they needed. This was the beginning of the 3S horse and rider education. After watching many equine clinicians, reading piles of books, renting stacks of videos, working with local trainers and visiting with knowledgeable horsepersons they began to realize there were pieces missing when it came to applying other methods to their own horses. As a result of this research it became apparent that in order to be successful, a more personalized approach was needed. Thus evolved the 3S method and its mission statement: To continuously improve the enjoyment, understanding and performance of you and your horse through techniques that identify and address barriers. What is the 3S? The 3S© utilizes recognized coaching techniques that have been successfully applied to a variety of business and life situations. It is organized to help in the assessment of individual circumstances and skills. The information is used to set goals, and establish and implement personalized plans. The resulting personalized plan is the centerpiece of the Safety, Sanity, Success motto. The 3S© recognizes that every person’s strengths and weaknesses are unique and that one size doesn’t fit all. The recognition of the uniqueness of each person allows for a plan that addresses individual circumstances. The personalized plan allows for each person to feel that they have control of the process of improvement and therefore the commitment to follow through. The 3S© includes both seminars in a classroom setting, workshops with hands-on participation, practices and exercise. Seminar participants can expect the following: • To learn to process information in a new way • To learn exercises for use anywhere • To learn to communicate clearly with their horses • To learn to have fun and challenge their preconceived ideas • To learn how to continue this process when they leave • To come away with an exciting and challenging view of the future for themselves and their horse. The 3S helps participants set goals and establish personalized plans of training. The training recognizes individual differences in style and individual differences in horse-and-rider relationships. 3S strives to improve the enjoyment, understanding and performance through techniques that Identify and address barriers to training and enjoyment for both horse and rider.
